?? What are the benefits from central government?

MNRE/TEDA 30% subsidy of the total investment on the Invoice Price Excluding Tax. Depreciation on income tax for profit oriented individuals and companies 80% on first year itself on invoice price.

?? How does Tamilnadu Government help us for installations of domestic solar power?

All Domestic consumers will be encouraged to put roof-top solar installations. A generation based incentive (GBI) of Rs 2 per unit for the first two years, Rs.1 per unit for the next two years, and Rs 0.5 per unit for the subsequent 2 years will be provided for all solar or solar-wind hybrid rooftops being installed before 3 March, 2014. To availe GBI, it is necessarily to install separate meters to measure rooftop generation

?? What is a PV (photovoltaic) unit?

A photovoltaic panel is constructed by connecting photovoltaic cells to produce electricity. These cells are based on semiconductor technology that converts solar radiation into direct current (DC) electricity.

?? What are the benefits of using photovoltaic systems?

By utilizing photovoltaic cells, home or business owners are able to generate electricity from sunlight saving money and avoiding harmful pollution generated by traditional methods of generating electricity like burning fossil fuels or nuclear power.

?? Which different types of PV panels exist?

There are currently four main types of Photovoltaics panels:
Monocyrstalline - these are made from cells created by cutting thin slices from solid crystalline silicon blocks and are higher in efficiency, but also higher in cost per watt. They are easy to spot because they have a smooth even color, usually black. MandoraSolar uses high efficient monocrystalline photovoltaics panels only.
Polycrystalline - these are made from cells created by cutting thin slices from polycrystalline silicon blocks and are lower in efficiency, but also lower in cost per watt. Polycyrstalline silicon is the "chicken nugget" of silicon, made by combining many individual crystals. They are easy to spot because they have an uneven color, usually blue.
Multicrystalline - a different term for polycrystalline.
Thin film - these are made by depositing a thin layer of very finely powdered silicon (amorphous silicon) or other photovoltaic material on a substrate. These are much lower in efficiency that crystalline cells, and somewhat cheaper per watt. Their low efficiency makes them undesirable for commercial and residential applications because they consume a large amount of (roof) space compared to mono- or polycrystalline panels.

?? How does shade affect the performance of a Photovoltaics system?

One of the leading causes of power loss in a photovoltaic system is shade on a part of the panel or array. Reason: In a photovoltaic panel, usually there are either 60 or 72 cells connected together. Each cell produces a certain voltage and amperage. The cells are configured and connected in a combination of serial and parallel connections to produce the correct amount of power. If any individual cell's performance is degraded by shade, the performance of the entire photovoltaic panel will decrease to a point relative to the worst performing cell. Likewise, in a string of photovoltaic panels, the entire string suffers performance reduction to that of the lowest performing photovoltaic panel. Any installation should be designed in such a way that no photovoltaic panel is even partly shaded at any point of the day.

?? How much roof space does a photovoltaic system need?

We recommend for VS Solar system 15 m² per 1 KW/p (160 Square feet). For a private house or a small shop/business usually a 2 to 5 KW/p VS Solar system will be the correct choice. The recommended area in this case is 30 m² to 60 m² (320 to 640 Square feet). VS Solar systems can be mounted on the roof of your building or on the ground. You can even use a piece of land which is not connected with the building or far away.

?? What is Roof installation?

Photovoltaic panels can be installed on the roof, on the side of a building, on the ground or on a pole. The most cost effective installation will usually be on a roof.

?? What about cloudy days?

Photovoltaic panels will generally produce electricity at a reduced rate under cloudy conditions. Severe clouds will interrupt the production of power.

?? What are the maintenance requirements or other costs for a photovoltaic system?

There is typically little or no maintenance required. You might consider a periodic inspection to ensure that the photovoltaic panels remain clear of leaves, dirt, bird droppings etc. Other than that no maintenance is required. unless there is any technical failure.

?? What are solar inverters?

A power inverter is a device that inverts DC (direct current) into AC (alternating current). In a photovoltaic installation, a power inverter is a centralized device that connects to and manages the performance of the photovoltaic array. It aggregates DC power coming from the photovoltaic panels or strings of photovoltaic panels and inverts the DC power into single phase or three phase AC power at the correct voltage for delivery into the user's electrical system and additionally provides equipment protection and safety features.

?? How do photovoltaic panels stand up to hail, wind, hurricanes etc.?

Photovoltaic panels themselves are built using tempered glass for durability and safety and are designed to withstand hail and strong winds. Depending on the wind- load requirements in your area, heavier mounting hardware may be required.

?? How long does it take to install a photovoltaic system?

A typical residential roof installation can be completed in 3-4 days. The number of photovoltaic panels and type of installation will affect the installation process.

?? Does a photovoltaic system affect the resale value of my property?

Yes it does - positively. Available real estate resale value data indicate that money spent on photovoltaic system installations is recoverable and may actually increase the value of the property beyond the amount spent.

?? Does the net metering process cover both the gas and electric bill?

Net metering will only cover the electricity portion of your utility bill.

?? Can a residential solar system be attached onto a tile roof?

Yes, your dealer will present a solution on installing a Solar system onto tile roofs in a seamless fashion. Please schedule a consultation with a VS-Solar Dealer to find out more.

?? Will I need to apply for any permits in order to install a solar system?

Your dealer will handle all permitting issues related to installing a solar system on your property.

?? What type of maintenance is involved with a solar system?

With a very few moving parts, a solar system is relatively maintenance free. An occasional cleaning of panels will ensure optimal performance.

?? Are the panels fragile?

No. As the panels are made of tempered glass, they’re quite strong. They passed hail tests and they are tested against extreme weather conditions.

?? How long will my VS-Solar system last?

VS-Solar panels have a 25-year performance warranty – longer than almost anything else you can buy. The rest of the system has a 10-year warranty in most areas. Inverters can have warranties up to 10 years.
